Acute Cerebral Posthypoxic Dystonia and Chorea: A Case Report

Abstract
A great number of movement disorders, including parkinsonism, dystonia, chorea, tics, tremor, athetosis, and myoclonic syndromes, have been described after hypoxic-ischemic conditions. In this article, we present a 24-year-old female patient who developed cerebral hypoxia after an attempt of strangulation by an assailant in her house in Afghanistan. On third day of hospitalization, acute dystonia and chorea were observed on patient’s arm and cervical area. Adjustment disorder and depression were detected at psychiatric examination. Patient
was brought to Turkey after the acute term at hospital. T2-hyperintense signal increase was observed in bilateral basal ganglia (putamen and caudate nucleus) on cranial magnetic resonance imaging. Anticholinergic and antidepressant treatment was initiated.
