Abstract

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a proven treatment method for advanced stage Parkinson’s disease associated with motor complications. Proper patient selection and correct surgical technique as well as postoperative programming and adjustment of medical treatment increase the success of DBS. Deep brain stimulation improves some signs of the disease, while dyskinesia, dystonia, speech, gait and balance disorders, and psychiatric symptoms may worsen postoperatively. In this article, we review the surgical management, postoperative follow-up, stimulator programming, and adjustment of medical management in Parkinson’s disease.
