Abstract

In dementia and various psychiatric diseases, the patient, patient’s relatives and the medical doctor may encounter difficult situations such as resistance to medical treatment and side effect of the medicine. This causes the need for exploring non-pharmacological treatment methods. The application of deep brain stimulation is considered to be an alternative treatment for psychiatric diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, treatment-resistant depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa. In the studies done so far, deep brain stimulation was applied to various target regions but no definitive data has been obtained yet about its place in clinical use.
